1991 - 2000 Late Self Portraits

Following an Alzheimer's diagnosis in 1995 Bill continued to paint, even as he found his ability diminishing. Blue Skies, 1995, would be his final large scale work, produced shortly after the diagnosis.

On the suggestion of one of the nurses who was treating him Bill set out to regularly paint self portraits over his last few years. This not only kept active, for as long as possible, a quintessential element of Bill's self identity, being a painter; but also the serves as a unique document of the psychological and physical effects of the disease. The works were the subject of medical research resulting in significant paper being published in The Lancet in June 2001.

Bill lost his ability to paint in 2000, and his final drawings were in 2002. In 2007 Bill died in Hammersmith Hospital, London.
